MAKE A PAPER PUPPET DUCK
AND LET HIM JUMP, SWIM AND FLY!

(just like in the book Will You Carry Me
by Heleen van Rossum and Peter van Harmelen)

puppet designed by Heleen van Rossum based on illustrations by Peter van Harmelen

Let the children in your classroom or home follow the duck when acting out the story of Will You Carry Me. The wings can flap!

What you need:
  • 7 sheets of white card stock
  • scissors, glue stick and tape
  • 2 small paper fasteners
  • 7 self seal laminating sheets (optional)
  • Download pdf file

    Instructions:

    1. Print out the pdf file on the card stock paper.
    2. Laminate the sheets on the printed side to prevent tearing.
    3. Cut out all parts along the lines.
    4. Glue both sides of the two duck feet and both sides of each wing together.
    5. Make incisions on both sides of the duck on the dots, where the wings will be inserted.
    6. Fold the tabs on the top part of the duck. Tape them to the inside parts of the sides, following the curve of the beak, neck and back of the duck. The rear end can stay straight and should not follow the tail curve.
    7. Fold the taps on the pink bottom part of the duck. Tape them on the side parts of the sides, connecting both pink parts on the sides of the duck.
    8. Stick the wings through the incisions and connect both parts inside with tape. This is the part which can be pulled by the index finger to make the wings flap.
    9. Attach the feet to the outside of the duck with the paper fasteners. Use the pointed end of your scissors or another sharp object to make the holes.
    10. Fold the tab on each side of the white bottom part of the duck. Tape them to the inside of the sides just behind both legs, leaving enough space to put the puppet on your hand.
